In our first two NeoCon blog posts, we discussed how color and technology were major players at the showcase. Our final favorite trend takes a look at how mixing materials can take a piece of furniture and completely change it’s look and purpose.

Material Mix-Up: Chair Backs

While walking around NeoCon, we noticed several manufacturers were showcasing their seating products with unique new details. Specifically, we saw a trend of wood veneers and other casing shells on the back of the chairs. Andreu World’s Best of NeoCon Gold Award-Winning Flex Executive Conference Chair (pictured left) is a great example of the power that mixing materials can have on the aesthetic of the piece. With a walnut veneer back, the Flex Executive adds a special touch to the chairs positioned around the conference table, contrasting with the light gray upholstered fabric seat. Paoli’s CO|HO chairs offer a seating solution that is both comfortable and beautiful, with an exposed back covered in quality veneer. Shown as a conference option on casters (pictured center), the CO|HO is also available with a four leg base and an optional tablet arm. OFS’ Madrid Chair (pictured right) features a quartered veneer shell and interior upholstered seat for added comfort. As seen in the photo, the upholstered seat continues up and wraps onto the arm. For maximum versatility, the chair is available in several back heights and bases, such as casters, four leg and four star bases.

Mixed Back Conference

Material Mix-Up: Lounge

The mixed materials trend wasn’t exclusive to conference and guest chairs, but was also found on soft seating options and lounge furniture. Two of our favorite pieces elevated the aesthetic of the trend through creative use of mixed upholstered seating. Allermuir’s Hepworth Chair (pictured left) showed us how a simple switch of the outside upholstery can completely change the look of a piece. With contrasting colors and fabrics, Hepworth is a great solution to spice up a reception area or private office.  The Tiger Leather featured on the outer back of the chair is a plush addition to the aesthetic of the piece. To create more private seating configurations, Poltrona Frau’s GranTorino HB, part of Haworth’s Haworth Collection, is a stunning option that includes a mixture of materials. The soft interior of the piece features comfortable seating and pillows, contrasting the luxurious Pelle Frau leather that wraps around the entire back of the seat.

With so many awesome debuts and showrooms at this year’s showcase, our team is looking forward to what NeoCon 2016 will bring for commercial interiors and furniture!
