With this year’s NeoCon Showcase wrapping up today, our team is reflecting on the product debuts, trends, and stand-out showrooms from the Merchandise Mart in Chicago. Debuting in 1969, NeoCon has been featuring key products and brands from lighting and flooring to furniture and textiles in the commercial interiors industry for decades. Over the next few days, we’ll be covering the top three trends this year, starting with a pop of color that couldn’t be avoided.
The color green made a major appearance at this year’s showcase. Whether it was the feature color for furniture pieces or the major accent color, green seemed to be everywhere. In various hues and levels of saturation, we found ourselves “envious” of many of the pieces in this color. One of our favorites included Haworth’s Poppy Chair, a beautiful debut from Patricia Urquiola, shown below (pictured left) in a stunning emerald tone, accompanying Studio Urquiola Tables and Haworth’s Trivati wall system. The vignette of these pieces mirrored a lush garden with hanging greenery and iridescent glass in the Trivati system. Moving around through the Haworth Showroom, there were various product lines that stood out in green: from the shamrock of the Zody Task Chair (pictured center) to the mint found in the storage and accessories of their Intuity Benching System (pictured right). The color introduced a fresh take on many of the products we’ve always loved from Haworth, as well as introducing some standout pieces.
Not to be outdone, Andreu World prominently featured many of their products, both new and old in this earthy tone. With contrasting materials like aluminum and wood, many of the products were a modern twist on classic aesthetics. Their highback Alya Lounge Chair with the Alya four star aluminum base Ottoman (pictured left), as well as the Manfred Sofa and Alya Ottoman (center), all found in a vibrant green, would add life to any space. One of our favorite product areas at Andreu World featured the Programma Closed Table and Lineal Comfort Stools – a configuration we often see in many corporate collaborative areas and cafes.
Over at Paoli’s Showroom, their CO|HO Chairs were vibrant and fun in a lime green, configured in a perfect collaborative lounge area with their CO|HO Coffee Table. Bernhardt Design’s take on the “Emerald City” trend was seen with their privacy lounge sofa Code, coordinating perfectly with their Apel Ottoman which can be used as additional seating or a side table to the lounge area. One of the more unique products we found on trend was BuzziPicNic by BuzziSpace, which was shown in varying heights to accommodate both seated and standing workers.
Beyond the prominence of green, we noted many of the showrooms incorporating vibrant oranges and cool blues – staying away from standard neutrals. With color being NeoCon 2015’s first trend we’re exploring, tomorrow we’ll unveil our next trend (here’s a hint: it’s “electric”). Stay tuned!
